Last Day of School Holidays
Today was a very special day!
It was the last day of the July school holidays and I had the amazing privilege of spending it with my grandson. 💖
When his dad fetched him after work and asked him what he had done, he asked me to fill his dad in - he had forgotten. Although, just a couple of hours before, after a late lunch, he climbed into the long bottom shelf of the bookshelf and said:
"Too late! I'm a book now! Read me!"
I proceeded to "read" what I saw: "Two eyes, a nose, a mouth with lots of teeth..." - but before I could go on, he said:
"No, granny. Read what we did today!"
I will now name the fun things we did together today that made this day memorable for both of us. This is especially for his dad, who otherwise would never know about today:)
Minutes after he arrived at 6.30am with a brand new Lego jet he had built, I went into a study session with a friend. He sat quietly and listened. Then we had something to eat and drink and I prepared to go out and run an errand. He took the jet with to show my friend.
While I doing the mornings business, he hopped straight into the front seat and sat happily in the car with my friend, happy to have a captive audience to listen to him explaining how the jet worked and was put together.
My friend teased that we were going to Cape Town, which caused a frown to appear on his little forehead. Of course, we were just going home.
We had some nice snacks and treats and spent hours taking apart the prized Lego jet and then putting it back together. He showed me how to follow instructions in building an item of Lego. I must admit, these were a bit easier to follow than some of the others I've seen.
We sat in the sun on the front steps drinking our cooldrinks and watching the myriad birds that were flying and diving all around. We walked up the steep driveway with his black plastic bike and he roared downhill several times, with me holding my breath while wondering if he was going to crash or go flying off the bike - but even though it shook profusely, he stayed on.
We packed away 3 weeks worth of fort structures, Lego pieces, half-built puzzles and plenty of paper and even, to his delight, managed to fit in some Mathematics! The darling child then proceeded to spend a few hours drawing pictures of some of his favourite things.
Simple pleasures make us happy. The thing we enjoy the most is being together. He told me the other day: "You're always happy, Granny." - What a testimony to the Creator of the Universe Whom I serve!
Happy Third Term of Grade Two my Beloved Grandson.
